Freed: Karen Matthews has been released from jail after serving just half her eight year sentence
Karen Matthews has been released from prison after serving just half of an eight-year sentence for kidnapping her own daughter – and now has ambitions to appear on the Jeremy Kyle show.
Matthews, 36, was dubbed Britain’s worst mother after she hatched a plot to abduct Shannon, then aged nine, in an attempt to claim a £50,000 reward.
Mother-of-seven Matthews was set free from Foston Hall prison in Derbyshire this morning and taken to a secret location believed to be within 30 miles of her former home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire.
She has not been given a new identity but underwent a full make-over whilst in prison to make her less recognisable over fears for safety on her release, and will live under an assumed name for the time being, sources said.
Matthews, who says she wants to appear on Jeremy Kyle’s show to take a lie detector test, will remain on licence for the remainder of her sentence and must observe strict rules or face being returned to prison.
A source told the Mail: ‘She left the prison this morning. It was all very secretive. She has been taken to an undisclosed location and will be under the protection of probation officials for her own safety.
‘She won’t be allowed out on her own and won’t be allowed to sign on like other offenders. She’ll be held in very secure conditions to make sure that she does not come to any harm.’
Residents on her former estate in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, have already made it clear she is not welcome back.
Julie Bushby, a neighbour and former
chairman of the local residents’ association, said: ‘Karen seems quite
happy. I don’t think she realises what has actually happened.
‘To my knowledge she has never said sorry or that she wishes she hadn’t done what she did.’
Victim: Shannon Matthews was only nine-years-old when she was abducted, drugged and tied up, just a mile from her home
Miss Bushby said the estate simply wanted to forget Matthews. ‘We are getting on with our lives and we want it to stay that way,’ she added. ‘It is four years ago. We just don’t want it anymore.’
Matthews and her accomplice, Michael Donovan, 44, sparked a £3.2million police hunt when they kidnapped Shannon from her home in February 2008.
The girl was kept imprisoned in his home, drugged tied up and stuffed into a drawer beneath a divan bed as a desperate 24-day police search scoured the area.
Police eventually found her, drugged but otherwise unharmed, less than a mile from her home after smashing in the door to Donovan’s house.
He was released from his eight year sentence last week.
Boarded up: The home of Karen Matthews in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, was the focal point for the 3-week hunt for Shannon
A cousin of Matthews revealed on ITV1’s Daybreak she would refuse to speak to Matthews if she tried to get in touch.
Accomplice: Michael Donovan kept Shannon stuffed in the drawer of a divan bed at his home for 24 days
Susan Howgate said: ‘If she gets in touch now I would never speak to her again.
‘Like I’ve said all along, I don’t want nothing to do with her no more because she’s ruined our lives and the rest of the family.
‘So if I ever see her out on the streets, I’ll never speak to her.
‘She wants to do this lie-detector and go on Jeremy Kyle. And she’s saying other people are involved – well, why don’t she just do it?’
Matthews’s friend Natalie Brown, who coaxed her to confess, added: ‘As far as I’m aware, from what’s been said and what’s been told, Karen still believes she didn’t do anything wrong.
‘She wants to do a lie detector test to prove that she didn’t do anything wrong and that there were other people involved in this.
‘She won’t confess, she’s saying there are other people involved but she won’t tell us who.’
Ms Brown also admitted she was pleased once Matthews confessed: ‘It was like a huge relief had been lifted.
‘It was just like it’s over – everyone can go back to their normal lives and everything. It’s over, it’s done with, everything is hopefully back to normal.’

Jeremy Kyle – the modern day stocks and ducking stool. If she’s hell bent on going on there, how come taxpayers’ money has been used to give her a makeover? Or will she get an un-makeover when she goes on TV?

That woman has to be the most terrible mother ever.
How on earth can any mother treat a child like that, just for money
It is disgusting.

If she’s willing to take a lie detector test, then let her. But no need for her to be on the Jeremy Kyle show, I’m sure a test could be arranged some other way. If she’s been given a change of appearance, it would seem ridiculous to be on a tv show anyway.

ITS BECAUSE ITS AN EASY PRISON LIFE AND OUT IN HALF THE TIME NOTHING TO DO WITH JUSTICE GB AND USA STYLE OR IF THEY WILL GET A FAIR TRIAL .JUST WANT TO DO THE CRIME BUT NOT THE TIME.

She wants to go on Jeremy Kyle and prove her innocence. Obviously still deluded and craving fame. Can I choose that my hard earned taxes do not help this sick woman.

What does a ‘full make-over’ entail? If it’s plastic surgery, then that’s expensive she doesn’t deserve it.
