TCP : U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry decided to extend his visit to Egypt for one more day for talks to step up efforts on a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas on the Gaza Strip, MENA reported Tuesday.
The U.S.’s chief diplomat met with Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday.
On July 14, media reports claimed that Kerry was scheduled to visit Cairo that day to discuss the ongoing conflict but other media outlets denied the rumors and U.S. officials told CNN that the visit was postponed.
Kerry’s visit was delayed, not canceled, Shoukry told Al-Hayat newspaper in an interview and that Egypt’s efforts will put an end to the escalation between both Palestine and Israel.
A total of 583 Palestinians were killed and 3,640 injured in Gaza since the beginning of the conflict, the Palestinian Heath Ministry said Tuesday. The U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) opened 60 of its schools to shelter more than 83,000 people who have fled so far.
On Saturday, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon began a tour to the Middle East in a bid to end the fighting between Israel and Palestinians, Youm7 reported.
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi is scheduled to meet Ban Ki-moon and John Kerry Tuesday to discuss means to end the Israeli military escalation in Gaza Strip, presidential spokesman Ehab Badawi said in a Monday press statement.
