Kerry in Asia to assure allies on US aid

In addition to his visits to major US allies in the region, South Korea and Japan, Kerry will also travel to China in an attempt to urge Chinese officials to pressure North Korea into abandoning its nuclear weapon program, The New York Times reports, citing “a senior State Department official” traveling with the top American diplomat.

According to the official, the US wants China to “crack down on the Illicit flow of funds that move through front companies and banks,” enabling the North Korean government to support its nuclear program.

“We want to see them do what we do, what the Japanese do, what the South Koreans do, which is to stick to UN Security Council resolutions… and stop those money trails,” the American officials is quoted as saying in the report.

The development comes as the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) just released and intelligence assessment to top American lawmakers, confirming for the first time that North Korea is capable of launch a nuclear missile attack.

Asia is the final leg of Kerry’s six-nation foreign tour that included visits to Israel, Turkey and Britain, where he attended a meeting of the Group of 8 industrialized nations in London.

The trip comes as North Korea is reportedly preparing to conduct a medium-range missile test with a range of 2,500 miles.
