Key US senator: Iran sanctions needed

An influential senator says the United States still needs to impose additional sanctions on Iran, despite efforts by the Obama administration to reach a final nuclear agreement with Tehran.

“There are many of us, Democrats and Republicans in this Senate, who believe the best way to avoid war and get Iran to give up nuclear weapons is by ratcheting up sanctions, not by reducing them,” Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

Iran says its uranium enrichment program is entirely for peaceful purposes.

Schumer, a member of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), also claimed that Tehran came to the negotiating table thanks to harsh US economic sanctions.

“The Iranians didn’t come to the table out of the goodness of their heart….The bottom line is very simple; it’s pretty logical that it’s sanctions, tough sanctions, that brought them to the table.”

Schumer has previously said that he would pursue imposing additional sanctions against Tehran. In November he said, “I am disappointed by the terms of the agreement between Iran and the P5+1 nations because it does not seem proportional.”

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany reached an interim deal in Geneva on November 24 under which the US and its allies made a commitment to lift some of the existing sanctions and not to impose new ones in return for Iran making restrictions to its nuclear energy program.

Since the deal was struck, many lawmakers have been pushing for more sanctions on Tehran.

Sen. Schumer along with Senators Robert Menendez and Mark Kirk have sponsored a sanctions bill which will likely come to vote after the Senate returns from holiday recess on Jan. 6.

The bill would broaden the scope of the sanctions already imposed against Iran over its nuclear energy program. It would also set tough conditions for a final comprehensive deal with Iranian nuclear negotiators.
