Kuwait: legal expert comments on US sanctions

A senior legal expert in Kuwait has commented on the Biden administration’s imposition of sanctions on two Kuwaiti citizens for their involvement in support for Hezbollah and Iran. The US Treasury announced the sanctions on Friday against a new network which is alleged to support, finance, and launder money for Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The unnamed expert told Al-Rai that the Kuwaiti Interior Ministry is in communication with the relevant US authorities through established channels, to track the offences attributed to Kuwaiti citizens. It will decide whether to prosecute them or not.

The sanctions affect two Kuwaiti citizens. According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, they have with others laundered tens of millions of dollars through regional financial systems and “conducted currency exchange operations and trade in gold and electronics for the benefit of both Hezbollah” and the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
