The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman first reported Tuesday that Donald Trump “has been telling a number of people he’s in contact with that he expects he will get reinstated by August.” Lara Trump — who is married to Donald Trump’s second-eldest son, Eric — is perhaps the most high-profile member of the former president’s orbit to weigh in on the Times’ report.
Her remarks on Thursday come amid growing anxiety among Democrats and some Republicans about Trump supporters’ ongoing efforts to relitigate and ultimately reverse the 2020 White House race, including a partisan audit of the Arizona election results that has attracted national attention.
On Sunday, former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn appeared to endorse the idea of a coup in the U.S. similar to the one that took place in Myanmar in February. Flynn, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general, has since sought to walk back his suggestion, and the military announced on Wednesday it would not investigate him for the statements.
Meanwhile, a handful of Republicans who championed Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election are running to become the top election officials in key swing states, opening up the possibility that — if elected — they could refuse to certify a potential 2024 Democratic presidential win in those battlegrounds.
According to a Quinnipiac University poll released last week, 66 percent of Republicans surveyed said they believed President Joe Biden’s victory last November was illegitimate.
Lara Trump served as a senior adviser to Trump’s reelection campaign and is now floating a possible Senate run in North Carolina to replace retiring Republican Sen. Richard Burr. Both Lara Trump and Eric Trump, executive vice president of the Trump Organization, spoke at the “Stop the Steal” rally outside the White House on Jan. 6 that preceded Trump supporters’ deadly siege of the Capitol.
At that event, Lara Trump told the crowd that her family was “in this fight to the bitter end,” while Eric Trump urged attendees to march on the Capitol and “stand up for what’s right.”
