Saad Hariri_Lebanon_(archives)Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri has “temporarily suspended” his resignation after presenting it to President Michel Aoun. The president had reportedly insisted that Hariri hand him his resignation personally, alleging that Hariri might have submitted his resignation under duress and pressure from Saudi Arabia.

Earlier on Tuesday, Egypt’s president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met with al-Hariri in Cairo. During the visit, al-Sisi stressed the importance of the stability of Lebanon affirming the importance of the historical relations between Egypt and Lebanon. Hariri, for his part, has according to presidential spokesman Bassam Radi, stressed Lebanon’s pride in Egypt’s positions and its support for Lebanon’s security and stability in light of Egypt’s longstanding and pioneering role in the region.

Hariri submitted his resignation after he visited Saudi Arabia. Questions were raised whether Hariri was being held by Riyadh against his will and whether he was under duress. After he reappeared, Hariri went to France where he met French President Macron, before he went on to Egypt.

A source from within the inner circle around Saad Hariri contacted nsnbc international editor-in-chief Christof Lehmann in 2014, presenting evidence that Hariri was one of the co-architects of the invasion of Iraq with the help of the so-called Islamic State. In a conversation with Lehmann on Tuesday, the same source said he could not be sure, but “Hariri may have run into problems with Riyadh and with Washington over his concerns that the Middle East war against Syria and Iraq results in a new civil war in Lebanon”.
