Liberal senator Simon Birmingham has paid tribute to the colourful career of retiring senator Mary Jo Fisher, who was charged with shoplifting and famously performed the hokey pokey in the Senate.
The Senate was still sitting at 2.30am (AEST) on Friday after a marathon eight-and-a-half-hour debate on legislation to extend the Northern Territory intervention by a decade.
As the Senate finished off its housekeeping before the winter break, fellow South Australian Senator Birmingham gave an adjournment speech honouring Senator Fisher’s outstanding work in the chamber and committees.
Last week Senator Fisher announced suddenly she would leave the Senate on August 10.
Senator Fisher faced court last year charged with shoplifting $93 worth of groceries and assaulting a security guard.
She avoided conviction or penalty due to her depression.
Senator Birmingham said MJ, as she was affectionately known, will be greatly missed.
“Mary Jo never forgot where she came from, she was a farm girl from Western Australia,” he told the Senate.
He said the senator used to have problems with bunions on her feet and had a colourful collection of Crocs that she would wear in the chamber.
“Her fashion style was always noted wherever she went,” he said.
