Libya general urges political change

Renegade Libyan General Khalifa Haftar has called for the judiciary to appoint a civilian presidential council to take over power in the country.

At a news conference in the eastern city of Benghazi on Wednesday, Haftar urged the Supreme Court “to form a civilian presidential high council tasked with forming an emergency cabinet and organizing legislative elections.”

The retired general accused the Libyan government of failing the Libyan people so far, saying that the next government should prevent the country from becoming a “hideout for terrorist.”

Soldiers loyal to Haftar, who was an army chief of staff under former dictator Muammar Gaddafi, launched an air and ground operation against militias in Benghazi on Friday, May 16.

Haftar’s forces attacked the General National Congress building in Tripoli and suspended its work on May 18. The government says Haftar’s loyalists did not have the mandate to carry out the operation, calling it an “attempted coup.”

Meanwhile, some state officials, including the Libyan Culture Minister Habib Amin announced support for Haftar. The head of Libya’s navy, General Hassan Abu-Shannaq, also announced his support for Haftar’s operation.

Earlier this week, Libya’s government announced that new parliamentary elections in the country, the second onces since the overthrow of Gaddafi in 2011, are scheduled to take place on 25 June.

Nearly three years after the fall of Gaddafi, Libya is still grappling with rising insecurity as the country has been witnessing numerous clashes between government forces and rival militia groups that refuse to lay down arms despite efforts by the central government to impose law and order.
