Libya orders pre-trial detention of cultural minister

The Libyan Public Prosecutor Al-Siddiq Al-Sour on Wednesday ordered the detention of the Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development Mabroukah Toughi on charges of financial corruption.

According to a statement issued by the Attorney General’s office, the Public Prosecution issued the order after identifying instances where she was “obtaining benefits by violating the laws and regulations of using public money and spending it in a manner other than its intended purpose.”

The minister is charged with “the falsification of official documents with the aim of complicating the procedures for examining and monitoring aspects of the disbursement of public money.”

Toughi has not issued a comment in response to the accusations.
