A group of religious leaders, politicians, and journalists in Britain have signed a letter calling for an independent inquiry into the conviction, reported the state-run BBC.
The call for an inquiry comes two days after Megrahi died in Libya. His death came almost three years after British doctors announced he had only three months to live.
In 2001, a Scottish court convicted Megrahi of the killing of 259 people who were on board of the plane, travelling from London to New York, and 11 more others on the ground.
Nevertheless, in 2009, Megrahi was released on compassionate grounds and returned to Libya where he received a hero’s welcome by former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.
Megrahi always rejected that he was responsible for the bombing and, in an interview with Scottish investigator George Thomson last year, said: “I am an innocent man”.
However, in response to the call for the inquiry, the Scottish government has said they do not doubt the safety of the conviction while maintaining they do not have the authority to order such an inquiry.
