This summer’s Olympics will take place in London, presided over by British celebrities and politicians and paid for by the nation’s taxpayers.
But a determined group of Francophones are insisting that every sign, announcement and leaflet at the landmark event should be published in French.
The Gallic activists believe their language should be placed on an equal footing with English at the Games.
Chez nous: Games organisers are now locked in fierce negotiations with French activists who are demanding their language be used everywhere throughout the Olympic Stadium, pictured
Their claim is based on the fact that the Olympic Charter of 1908 states that the ‘official languages of the International Olympic Committee are French and English.’
The London Organising Committee have tried in vain to plead that English is now a universal tongue, according to The Times.
L’histoire: The argument is based on a Charter drawn up bu the inventor of the modern Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin
LOCOG is now locked in a battle of wills with the International Organisation of la Francophonie, represented by Michaelle Jean, a former Governor General of Canada.
‘The initial reaction was to say that London was a cosmopolitan city where lots of languages are spoken, so why use French,’ she said.
‘We had to spend a lot of time explaining the Olympic Charter and making sure that it would be respected.
‘The discussions have been long and intense but I think the London Organising Committee has rallied to our goal.’
The Charter, unsurprisingly, was drawn up by a Frenchman – Baron Pierre de Coubertin, inventor of the modern Games.
Rallying cry: The International Organisation of la Francophonie plan to hold a festival to promote their cause in London’s Trafalgar Square
The Francophones plan to honour his memory with a high-profile festival to promote their cause in London’s Trafalgar Square.

They hope 70,000 will attend the open-air event, at which French-speaking musicians will perform under the banner ‘Le Francais, j’adore’ (I love French).
Lebanese rapper Rayes Bek and Haitian folk singer Melissa Laveaux are among the artists who will appear.
Mrs Jean added: ‘It is the first time we have organised an event of such importance in a country that is not part of the Francophony. But we wanted to do it in London ahead of the Olympic Games.’
The news comes a day after the Games ambassadors’ garish pink and purple uniforms were unveiled by a quintessentially English gentleman, Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
Sorry chaps, we’re British: London Mayor Boris Johnson, pictured modelling the Olympic ambassadors’ uniform this weekend, remains the quintessential English gentleman
