London Tube workers on two-day strike

London Underground train workers have begun a two-day strike in the British capital following failure of talks over job cuts and office closures.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) began their 48-hour walkout on Monday in protest against plans to close about 250 ticket offices and 950 jobs in a restructuring that according to London’s public transport network, Transport for London (TfL), could save 50 million pounds a year.

The strike action, taking place from 9:00 p.m. on Monday evening until the same time on Wednesday, came after London Underground bosses rejected last-gasp attempts by RMT to reach settlement.

According to reports, the strike will cost the capital about 600 million pounds ($1 billion) in lost working hours, business and productivity. Severe disruption is expected during the rush hours on Tuesday and Wednesday.

“The current plans, closing every ticket office and axing nearly a thousand safety-critical jobs, is solely about massive austerity cuts driven centrally by David Cameron and his government and implemented by Mayor Boris Johnson,” RMT acting general secretary Mick Cash said.

The walkout is the latest in a series of industrial action on the Tube since UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s coalition government took office, promising belt-tightening measures to rein in a record deficit.

In February, thousands of London tube workers stopped working in protest over job cuts. The two-day strike action crippled the network used by about 3 million people daily as only limited services ran on some lines, forcing commuters to use other ways to get to work.

The RMT union has already planned a three-day strike next week.

London’s subway, which is the oldest in the world, carries nearly three million passengers per day.
