Los Angeles Kings vs. New Jersey Devils LIVE: Stanley Cup Final Game 4 At Staples Center

Stanley Cup Final
Game 4
Los Angeles Kings vs. New Jersey Devils
Staples Center
Los Angeles, California
June 6, 2012, 8:00 PM EST

Will the Stanley Cup be lifted tonight? Before their home crowd, the Los Angeles Kings will try to finish off the New Jersey Devils in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, which would make it the first Final sweep since 1998 (Red Wins over Capitals).

Given the Kings’ recent dominant form, some out there may have forgotten that they were seeded eighth in the West when the playoffs began. Getting hot (and starting to find the opposition’s net) at the right time, the Kings have lost just two games thus far and stand just one win away from the first championship in franchise history. Led by a goaltender so otherworldly that the Men In Black should look into this, L.A. ousted the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in the West.

Can the Devils stop tonight from becoming a coronation? New Jersey looked demoralized in Game 3, after those two overtime losses at home. They will need a miracle to pull off such a comeback to take home the Cup, something only three teams have ever done in NHL postseason history (one in the Final). But tonight their goal will just be force one more game.

Can New Jersey stave off elimination? Or will the Kings complete the sweep and hold up the Cup?

@ drosennhl :
No shots for the Kings on that power play.

Icing called against the Kings with 8:25 left in the period.

@ StevePalumboNHL :
Ill-timed PP opportunity for the #LAKings. Big, huge, ginormous moment for the #NJDevils.

Devils kill the PP.

Carter put the puck on net and the Kings had a chance to get it in on the rebound but nobody could get their stick on the puck. NJ’s Greene clears it with 30 seconds left.

Devils clear it right away after the faceoff and they clear it after the first time LA bring it in. 1:30 left in thePP.

Salvador is called for interference on Jeff Carter behind the net. He looked like he put his stick between Carter’s legs. Pivotal moment for the Kings. Can the Devils hold them off?

Penner passes to Richards on his left who takes a big shot but it goes wide of the net. There’s a delayed penalty on NJ.

Nolan shoots it in between a defender’s legs but it goes off Brodeur, Kopitar tries to stick it in on the rebound but misses. On the other end Parise takes a big shot but Quick makes a quick leg save. Yeah I said it.

Gagne gets the puck right in front of the net but shoots it wide of the net. Voynov gets it back but Brodeur stops and holds the puck.

Williams gets a steal and takes it in himself before passing it to Brown on his right. Mitchell gets the puck on the right side after a deflection but gets his shot blocked by Brodeur.

@ Ledger_NJDevils :
With the puck deflected to Kovalchuk at the left edge of the crease at 2:30, he was unable to bury it in the open net

@ DaveLozo :
Kovalchuk was about as unprepared for that pass as you can get. It was a thing of beauty by Zajac. #NJDLAK #Enigmatic

@ reallisa :
Quick could always teach a pilates class in the offseason. Flexibility off the charts. #lakings #nhl

Parise takes it in and crosses it to Zajac but the shot is stopped by Quick. Kovalchuk gets the puck off the rebound on the left side of the net but he can’t get it past Quick who slides across the crease.

MArtinez gets a shot off but it’s stopped by Brodeur and the Devils clear it to kill the power play. Two power plays for each team and no goals scored.

The second period is underway. Kinds have a minute left in the PP.

@ drosennhl :
Devils won 14 of 22 faceoffs, had two power play chances, and still can’t score a goal.

@ reallisa :
And the ailing Kovalchuk – 7:47 ice time for Devils in first. #lakings #injuriesrevealedafterplayoffs

NHL Tonight crew emphasizing limiting Kovalchuk’s ice time, saying it’s “deflating” for the team to have him out there for so long and doing so many good things but not getting the puck in the net.

@ helenenothelen :
end of first period at Staples Center: Devils 0, #lakings 0. shots were 8-7 for Devils. Kings hit post twice.

@ DaveLozo :
Kings come close — Kopitar off the outside of the net — and the period ends 0-0. Maybe the breaks are going the Devils’ way? #NJDLAK

Richards takes a shot, blocked, Brown takes a shot and that gets blocked and that’s how the period ends. 0-0 after one.

Kopitar takes a big one-timer and it goes off the post

Kopitar tries to go 1-on-1 with Volchenkov, tries to shake him but the puck gets knocked away. Meanwhile Salvador is penalized for two minutes on an elbow. Kings on the power play.

Kings gain the zone and Penner takes a wrister but it’s turned aside by Brodeur.

@ DaveLozo :
Deflection catches the post behind Brodeur, who is hit with a red spotlight like he was about to be abducted by aliens. #NJDLAK

@ helenenothelen :
Voynov shot was redirected by Williams off the post. light went on briefly. clearly not a goal for #lakings.

Ponikarovsky takes a big whack but the puck goes right into the glove of Quick.

Bad change by the Devils led to a big 2-on-1 by the Kings and Williams got off a big shot but it went wide of the net. They got the rebound and put it back on net and the siren briefly went on but the puck was nowhere near the net.
