“I am currently in front of the Algerian consulate in district four in Gao,” one witness told AFP on Thursday, adding that the rebels “have entered the consulate, arrested the diplomats and staff and taken down the Algerian flag to put up their own.”
The information was confirmed moments later when Algeria’s foreign ministry announced that the consulate had been attacked with seven of its staff members kidnapped.
“Everything necessary will be done to ensure the safe and sound return of our nationals,” the ministry said.
The town of Goa had on Saturday been seized by Tuareg rebels who have since January been fighting to establish independence in a territory in northern Mali known as Azawad.
On Thursday, the rebels announced that they had successfully completed their military “mission” in seizing total control of Azawad.
Their “mission” was only made successful after March 22 when renegade Malian soldiers led by Amadou Sanogo toppled Mali’s President Amadou Toumani Toure in a coup and took control of government institutions.
The coup led to a power vacuum in the country, which the rebels effectively exploited.
The irony is that the coup leaders had said they mounted the coup out of anger at the government’s inability to contain a rebellion in the north of the country.
