A Georgia man says police officers approached him at his new home with guns drawn because they thought he was breaking in, and even as he explained to them that he was just moving in that day, they proceeded to throw him face first onto the ground and handcuff him. The incident was caught on camera, and now, the man has filed a complaint against the department.
According to reports, 69-year-old Dhoruba Bin-Wahad was sitting outside of his new rental home in Clayton County when two officers approached with their guns drawn.
“I assumed, apparently incorrectly, and naively, that they were pursuing someone on foot that had fled through my yard, and I was unaware of it,” said Bin-Wahad at a recent press conference. “I thought that that’s why they had their guns drawn.”
The officers reportedly received a call from a neighbor who believed that Bin-Wahad was breaking into the usually vacant house, unaware that anyone had been set to move in.
“When I came out of the house, the first thing I said was that ‘I’m moving in. I have the key,’” said Bin-Wahad. “They asked me why was my car in the back. I said, ‘It’s my house. I was loading boxes.’”
The officers can be seen in the cell phone video approaching Bin-Wahad, who is sitting on the front steps, grabbing him by the arm, and throwing him face down onto the concrete before handcuffing him.
In the police report, the officers claimed that Bin-Wahad was being, “uncooperative and verbally argumentative,” something that both he and his legal counsel vehemently deny.
Eventually, the officers left without arresting Bin-Wahad, and now, he has filed a formal complaint against the Clayton County Police Department.
It doesn’t appear that the department has commented on the issue as of now.
