Man hit on head with hammer during home invasion

A man has been seriously hurt after he was hit on the head with a hammer in a home invasion in western Sydney, police say.

The man, 26, was at home with his wife, 24, on Gibbons Street, Auburn, when he went to answer his front door about 3am today, Inspector Barry Vincent of Flemington Local Area Command said.

Four masked men armed with an axe, firearm and knife forced their way in and hit the man on the head with a hammer before running off, police said.

They also took “a small amount of cash and property”, Inspector Vincent said.

The man suffered a deep cut to his head and was treated by paramedics before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition.

His wife was not hurt.

Inspector Vincent said it was too early to say if the attack was targeted or random.

He urged all residents to be vigilant when they were approached late at night or in the early hours of the morning, and for anyone with information to phone Flemington police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
