PressTV – Nelson Mandela’s body flown to his ancestral village

On Saturday, Mandela’s body arrived in Qunu where his state funeral will be held tomorrow.
Large numbers of people have turned out in the region to pay their respects as the cortege passes by.
This comes after his coffin was taken to an air base in Pretoria where members of South Africa’s governing party, the African National Congress (ANC), said farewell to the late anti-apartheid icon.
Over the last three days, at least 100,000 people came to see Mandela’s body lying in state in Pretoria.
Thousands of people, including presidents from Africa, several prime ministers, and the Iranian vice-president, are expected to attend the Sunday’s funeral.
The funeral will be held based on traditional rituals. It will be the culmination of 10 days of mourning for Mandela who passed away last Thursday at the age of 95.
South Africans have been holding vigils since the country’s former president passed away on December 5.
Mandela passed away after a long battle against lung illness. He had been receiving treatment at home since September.
He led South Africa’s transition from white-minority rule in the 1990s after nearly three decades in prison and was one of the towering political figures of the 20th century.
Mandela served as president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999, and was the first South African president to be elected in a fully representative democratic election.
