March Madness: No. 4 seed Michigan defeats No. 1 seed Kansas in overtime, 87-85

The No. 4 seed Michigan Wolverines shocked the No. 1 seed Kansas Jayhawks and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament in the South Region Friday evening, 87-85.

In the first overtime game of the 2013 NCAA tournament the Wolverines came back from 14 points down to knock off the Jayhawks.

Kansas appeared to have the game in hand as the Jayhawks fought off every Wolverine run. The Jayhawks went on a 22-10 run with four minutes elapsed in the second half that put them up 68-54, but they could not hold off Trey Burke.

Burke had an abysmal first half, going into the break with no points after missing all four of his field goal attempts. He had 18 points in the second half. Burke scored a layup with 14 seconds remaining to cut the Kansas lead to three points. The Wolverines fouled Elijah Johnson, sending him to the line for a one-and-one attempt. He missed the front end, and Burke hit a 30 foot 3-pointer eight seconds later to tie the game with five seconds remaining.

In overtime Mitch McGary hit back-to-back jumpers to give the Wolverines a three point lead. After stealing the ball from Johnson, Michigan’s Glenn Robinson III was fouled. He made both free throw attempts to put Michigan up by five points with 53 seconds left in overtime. Only six seconds later Johnson hit a 3-point shot in transition and cut the Wolverine lead to two points.

Michigan had the ball with a two point lead and 47 seconds on the clock. The Wolverines tried to run as much clock as possible but were unable to score before a shot clock violation gave Kansas the ball with a little over nine seconds remaining. Johnson drove through the Michigan defense and looked like he might have an open layup, but he passed the ball back out to Naadir Tharpe, who was unable to connect on a last second 3-pointer.

The loss means that Kansas is the third No. 1 seed to fall in this year’s tournament. The only remaining No. 1 seed is the Louisville Cardinals.

McGary led the Wolverines with 25 points and 14 rebounds. He was 12-17 shooting from the floor. Burke added 23 points and 10 assists. Robinson had 13 points and eight rebounds while Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 10 points, and Nik Stauskas had 11 points. The Wolverines shot the ball well, making 49.3 percent of their field goal attempts.

Kansas had five players in double figures. Ben McLemore led the Jayhawks with 20 points. Travis Releford added 16 points and six assists. Kevin Young contributed 12 points and seven rebounds while Jeff Withey had 12 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Johnson finished the night with 13 points. Kansas shot 54.5 percent from the floor.

Michigan will face the winner of No. 3 seed Florida vs. No. 15 seed Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday. The time of the game is still to be determined.
