The protest was mostly peaceful as demonstrators gathered waving flags and
dancing to music however several demonstrators attempted to attack a bank.
Almost one in three young people in Turkey is without a job and the government
fears social unrest and increased ethnic tension because of the downturn.
In Seoul, South
Korea, around 10,000 workers marched to commemorate the 122nd
Labour Day and demand better working conditions, while in Cuba
the mood of the parade was more celebratory as it marched through Havana’s
Revolution Square affirming the government’s intention of assuring a
communist future for the Caribbean island.
A similar mood prevailed in Russia where Russian
media reported an estimated 120,000 people waving Russian flags and as
pro-Kremlin placards marched down Moscow’s Tverskaya Street in a rally
organised by the unions and the ruling United Russia party.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and president-elect and prime minister
Vladimir Putin even joined the head of the march as it turned into Manezh
Square near the Kremlin.
