McCain urges probe into WH ‘cover-up’

Republican Senator John McCain renews calls for a select congressional committee to investigate the White House “cover-up” of the 2012 deadly attack on the US compound in Benghazi, Libya.

The Arizona Republican accused the White House of crafting a false narrative about the attack in an effort to reelect President Barack Obama.

“We now know that the whole addressing of this tragedy of the loss of four Americans was a political exercise inside the White House,” he stated Thursday on Fox News.

“This was all in line with a reelection campaign rather than the facts… that’s what’s outrageous about this.”

In light of newly disclosed documents, Republicans are once again turning the heat on the Obama administration over its response to the September, 11, 2012 attack in which four Americans, including ambassador Christopher Stevens, lost their lives.

The administration initially blamed the attack on an ongoing protest in the Muslim world against a demeaning US-made anti-Islam video which it said escalated into a full-blown tactical assault.

Emails obtained by government watchdog group Judicial Watch on Tuesday indicated White House officials were involved in creating the “talking points” for then-US ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice regarding the deadly assault.

One of the emails details national security adviser Ben Rhodes who insisted Rice should “underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy.”

Rice appeared on a series of talk shows the weekend after the assault and called it a spontaneous response to the video.

Republicans immediately questioned the administration’s narrative, calling it an attempt to hide a major security breakdown that signaled the broader failed policy in the region.

“It is an obvious cover-up by the White House,” Sen. McCain said Thursday.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) also called the memo a “smoking gun” that proves the White House tried to spin the facts two months before the presidential election.
