Molly Meldrum is awake again and showing signs of recovery from a head injury received in a recent fall.
His manager Mark Klemens told AAP that Meldrum has come out of sedation in hospital and is responding to basic commands.
Although the music guru remains in a serious but stable condition his latest small step forward has cheered his supporters on Christmas Day.
The 65-year-old fractured his skull in a fall three metres down stairs at his Richmond home while he was putting up Christmas decorations 10 days ago.
Doctors at The Alfred hospital have taken Meldrum off the ventilator and he is now responding to “very very basic commands”, Mr Klemens said.
“Certainly he’s not in a position to hold a conversation, or anything like that,” he said.
“He’s a bit sore and a bit uncomfortable but it’s all a positive step and a great Christmas present for the family.”
Last week the veteran TV presenter underwent surgery to repair fractures in his collarbone and ribs.
