Suspends 49,000 Hog Farm.
Mexico City, Mexico — The First Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice of Mexico confirmed on May 19, 2021 the definitive suspension of the hog farm of the company “Producción Alimentaria Porcícola” (PAPO) in favor of the children of the Mayan village of Homún, Yucatán, Mexico.
The vote was unanimous, with which the Supreme Court Judges confirmed the definitive suspension against the farm, which must remain closed until the definitive trial is resolved. The decision of the Mexican Supreme Court rules in favor of the Mayan people of Homún, specifically to the Mayan children who through an amparo lawsuit have succeed in suspending the 49,000 hog farm, since October 9, 2018.
The decision of the highest court protects the right to health, the environment and a dignified life for the girls and boys of the Mayan people of Homún. At the same time, it lays the groundwork for the final resolution, which is still to be resolved in the Second District Court in the State of Yucatan.
Industrial animal operations are notorious polluters, threatening air and water quality and human health. The particular operation at issue in this lawsuit is expected to generate over 600 million pounds of urine and feces each year, more than is generated by the entire human population of Tijuana.
