Two Indian police officers and a civilian have been killed after unidentified militants attacked a police vehicle in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, officials say.
The attack took place in the Galander area of Pampore town, located 14 kilometers (nine miles) south of Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar, at around 7:45 p.m. local time (1415 GMT) on Wednesday as militants opened indiscriminate fire on a police vehicle.
A police official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said two policemen and a bystander sustained injuries in the shooting. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment.
Following the attack, contingents of Indian army, police and paramilitary rushed to the site and cordoned off the area. However, no one was arrested as militants managed to escape in the darkness.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
According to health authorities, the civilian was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital, while the two policemen later succumbed to their wounds.
Islamabad and New Delhi have fought two wars over Kashmir since their independence from British colonial rule in 1947. The arch rivals lay claim over the whole region but control parts of it.
India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control in 2003, and a year later launched talks aimed at brokering regional peace.
The process was however suspended after over 160 people lost their lives in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based militants.
