Militants kill four soldiers in Yemen

Four Yemeni soldiers have been killed in a militant attack on a special forces’ checkpoint in southeastern part of the country, a security official says.

The unnamed official said that the gunmen “suspected of belonging to al-Qaeda” opened fire on the checkpoint at the western entrance to the port city of Mukalla, which is the provincial capital of Hadramawt, on Tuesday.

The deadly assault left two other soldiers injured and the militants also broke into a nearby police station where they stripped officers of their weapons but did not kill them, he stated.

On April 4, suspected al-Qaeda gunmen killed eight soldiers in an attack on an army post in Hadramawt. Four militants also died in the attack.

The assault came after al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for an attack on an army command in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden on April 2. Six soldiers and three civilians lost their lives in the incident.

Al-Qaeda-linked violence against Yemeni security forces has grown since February 2012, when President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi came to power in a one-man election backed by Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Hadi replaced long-time dictator, Ali Abdullah Saleh, who was ousted after a year of mass protests across the country.
