Federal Education Minister Peter Garrett has hailed a meeting of the country’s education ministers on a new schools funding scheme as a co-operative success.

The gathering has heard from the author of the report into school funding, David Gonski.

By June a high-level plan should set out how to move towards reforms, starting with base funding levels per student.

Mr Garrett says today’s meeting suggests the reform will happen.

“Mr Gonski identified not only a schooling resource standard but a series of loadings that might apply to students as well – there’s a great deal of work but we can do it,” he said.

New South Wales Education Minister Adrian Piccoli says the meeting made sure the response to Mr Gonski is a state and federal partnership.

“These are reforms critical for the future of Australia and these are reforms far too big to fail,” he said.

Mr Garret hopes change be legislated this year.

“Let’s not continue to get caught in a debate about how long is it going to be before we see what the dollar figure is,” he said.

“Let’s recognise that education reform is too serious a matter to be done other than in the most ordered cooperative and constructive way.”
