More fish dying in central Qld waters

Another fish kill is reportedly under investigation in central Queensland.

Gladstone commercial fisherman Chris Sipp claims he discovered about 15 barramundi with skin lesions in the Boyne River this week.

Fishing was banned for three weeks in Gladstone Harbour last year, when barramundi and other fish turned up with cloudy eyes and discolouration.

Most fishermen blame a large-scale dredging operation but the government says last summer’s floods caused the problems.

Mr Sipp says another find of sick fish has him worried.

“I’d say it probably happened two, three days ago,” he told ABC Radio on Wednesday.

“I wasn’t in the area at the time, a lot of us weren’t in the area so I haven’t heard any reports, but I’ll be finding out.”

The Department of Environmental and Resource Management is investigating, ABC Radio reports.

The Queensland Greens say Gladstone Ports Corporation data shows turbidity levels in the harbour were above normal for four days over the Christmas period.

Greens member and environmental medicine specialist, Dr Andrew Jeremijenko, says Gladstone’s acid sulphate soils and suspended metals – in particular aluminium – were mobilised in the dredging sediment during turbid conditions.

“It poses a range of health problems for fish, sharks, prawns and other aquatic organisms,” he said.

“The gills of fish are particularly sensitive to the toxic effects of aluminium and there was a significantly greater amount of aluminium found in the gills of diseased fish than in their muscle and liver.”

People who were fishing over Christmas should have been told of the possible dangers of high nutrient levels in the water but the data was released only on Tuesday, Dr Jeremijenko said.

Gladstone Ports Corporation has approvals to dredge 46 million cubic metres from the harbour in order to expand for gas exports.

It wants the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage area to be redrawn to exclude the harbour.
