According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), lead levels in children of Flint, Michigan have been dropping since the city’s water supply was taken off the toxic Flint River.

In a press release, Patrick Breysse, director of the national center for environmental health at the CDC, admitted that this “crisis was entirely preventable” which is a sobering “reminder of the critical need to eliminate all sources of lead from children’s environment.”

Breysse explained that the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention program at the CDC is working to “support the people of Flint” to help “raise awareness and promote action to address the critical public health issue in communities across the country.”

And while that is fine, the problem is that elevated lead levels found in the children of Flint is expected to result in a variety of health and psychological issues – everything from headaches to behavioral changes that could be permanent.

The nine thousands children in Flint, ages six years and younger, have been exposed to a toxic contaminant that is known to lower IQ, cause learning disabilities which makes this city the most vulnerable population of people in the US.

The CDC considers 5 micrograms per deciliter of lead exposure cause for “concern”, but does not confirm that any level of lead exposure would be considered “safe”.

Mona Hanna-Attisha, the pediatrician that originally exposed this crisis to the media last year, confirmed that after the water supple switch “the percentage of kids with lead poisoning doubled… [and] in some neighborhoods, it tripled.”

Breysse added : “What we have documented is there is a clear increase in blood lead levels in the children who were screened over time. We have shown there was about a 50 percent increase in the proportion of children with elevated blood lead levels in the population that was screened.”

The CDC report reads in part: “After the switch back to the Detroit water system, the percentage of children under 6 years with elevated blood lead levels returned to levels seen before the water switch took place.”
