On Tuesday, Rape Crisis England and Wales reported, 78,000 calls for help were made to its national helpline in the 12 months to October, being almost 2,000 extra calls a month since 55,000 were reported during 2011-12.
The increase comes a year after the first sexual abuse case on former TV host Jimmy Savile surfaced; first broadcast on UK television on October 2.
Rape Crisis spokeswoman Katie Russell said the “shocking” figures may not be reflecting the total amount of abuses to women and children, and “sexual violence sadly happens a lot more than most people think,” but more are seeking help for the “devastating and lifelong” effects it has.
“This is reflected in the fact that 450 survivors have reported Savile since his death, while only four felt able to during his lifetime.”
Savile, who died aged 84 in October 2011, is known to be Britain’s worst sex offender after police discovered that he preyed on at least 450 victims aged 8 to 47.
