A bushfire burning on an island off southeast Queensland is proving hard to contain.
The fire broke out north of Cowan, on the popular tourist destination Moreton Island, on Wednesday.
Attempts to corner the blaze with backburning have been unsuccessful according to Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service operations manager Andrew Hoffman.
“Overnight the fire remained fairly active,” Mr Hoffman told ABC Radio on Thursday.
“As a result the fire continues to spread.
“This morning our initial efforts will be to clarify where the boundaries now are and then deciding the exact strategies to deploy.”
Campers were evacuated on Wednesday as a precaution and the town is not under threat.
