(Scroll down for video) A woman drowned in a river after driving her car into a river and the police dispatcher did not understand her pleas for help, according to video uploaded to the internet.
The chilling recording that was released by the California police captured the frantic emergency call from the woman who drove her car into the Sacramento River, and then had trouble asking for help because her English was poor.
Mussarat Chaudhary spent several precious minutes trying to tell a police dispatcher of Yolo County, that she was trapped in her 2009 Toyota Camry after she swerved off Old River Road and plunged into the river.
“Down river car!” Chaudhary told the dispatcher, according to the released recording.
“Car! Car! River!” She said.
The dispatcher asked what language she spoke, and the 57-year-old replied that her language is Punjabi, which is spoken in Afghanistan and India.
When a translator appeared on the line she told the operator: “She’s in the water, in the car.”
The line went dead after about eight minutes. Emergency crews could not reach her.
“It seems that I lost her,” the dispatcher said.
Later that morning, crews pulled the car from the river. Chaudhary, a mother of seven children, was found dead in the back seat.
According to local press reports, Chaudhary’s Camry was part of a major recall last year.
About four million vehicles were recalled to fix problems with the accelerator pedal.
“We sympathize with anyone in an accident with one of our vehicles,” Toyota said in a statement.
“It is terrible that a person died just because the emergency operator did not understand what she was saying,” a source close to the family told YourJewishNews.com.
Chaudhary was a dishwasher at Cache Creek Casino in Brooks, an hour west of Sacramento, and was returning home from work when the accident occurred, authorities said.Mobile video not loading? Click here to view
