N Korea may boycott Asian Games

North Korea has threatened to boycott the upcoming Asian Games in South Korea after talks over the event broke down a day earlier.

Pyongyang said on Friday that it will review its decision on entering the games,  scheduled to take place in the South Korean city of Incheon from September 19 to October 4.

North Korean officials had earlier stated that the country would send 350 athletes and 350 cheerleaders to attend the games as part of measures aimed at reducing tensions with the South.

On Thursday, the two Koreas held talks at a border village over participation at the games, but the meeting ended with no agreement.

Many in South Korea doubt the North’s sincerity in establishing a lasting peace, citing a series of missile launches in recent weeks.

Seoul also accuses the North of using big national flags, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

Pyongyang, however, accuses Seoul of aiming to stop North Korea from attending the games.

The dispute comes as Washington and Seoul launched a joint five-day maritime maneuver in South Korean waters on July 16.

The North fired two short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan on July 13. The range of the missiles was reported to be around 500 kilometers (310 miles).

North Korea said the tests and drills were aimed at showing its anger at planned South Korea-US naval war games.

The two countries remain technically at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, not a peace deal.
