NATO ministers agree to increase personnel for Afghanistan training mission to some 16,000

nsnbc : NATO defense ministers on Thursday agreed to increase the number of personnel as part of the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan to around 16 thousand. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg made the announcement at the end of a two-day meeting of the alliance’s Defense Ministers in Brussels.

NATO Defense Ministers_Brussels_2017Stoltenberg, welcomed the fact that “Afghan forces are making progress, even though the situation remains very challenging.” No more than about 40 percent of the country are currently controlled by the Afghan government in Kabul.

According to a statement by the Alliance, the Ministers also agreed on the importance of funding for the Afghan security forces, and welcomed Afghanistan’s intention to make further progress on reforms and reconciliation. The latest commitment by the NATO members comes as Washington announced its new policy for Afghanistan and South Asia few months earlier.

In August the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump concluded that the consequences of a rapid exit are both predictable and unacceptable. Ironically, Trump would refer to the attacks on September 11, 2001 claiming the attacks had been planned in and had been executed from Afghanistan. Independent investigative journalism and research has poked a hole in the “official narrative”, at least in as much as the FBI never added the 9/11 attacks to Osama bin Laden’s rap-sheet due to “lack of evidence”.

That said, Trump, who during his election campaign claimed he knew “the real perpetrators and would reveal them” added in August “I concluded that the security threats we face in Afghanistan and the broader region are immense.  Today, 20 U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organizations are active in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the highest concentration in any region anywhere in the world.”
