Awake Goy –for Michael Palin
A middle-age white man wearing a black suit
is standing on a shore admiring the sea.
He quickly chuckles to himself
picturing an Indian in full gear
(standing in the middle of Times Square).
Then he glances around wondering if he’s going
to be arrested by Information Retrieval.
Even though it’s his lunch break he knows
he’s required by law to keep his mind occupied
showing loyalty to his employer, making money
for The Corporation rather than thinking, freely.
I’m a Thought Criminal, he thinks with a smirk
reminded of the old book 1984,
which had been handed to him
by a hippie uncle when he was a kid.
He glances-around with a look of paranoia
in his eyes.
He is a Worker Bee, after all—a worker
for the cause.
He knows to stand there in company attire
on the clock staring-out into the infinity
of the ocean horizon is considered
straight-up anarchy.
Fuck it, he thinks imagining himself surfing
on an oncoming wave
(wearing that very suit).
He can’t help but laugh aloud,
as a boat run by magnetics and radiation flames
suddenly arrives from out of nowhere
on the ocean horizon.
It’s a Police Oceanic Unit—black
with pointy angles all around the shape of its plastic-metal hull—
a red light with a window case
at its peak.
A policeman wearing the usual, government, black uniform
(with shoulder pads big as those football players from the old NFL)—
black visor to boot—
suddenly speaks into a walkie-talkie mechanism,
which is attached to a giant boat speaker,
and says: “You have approximately five seconds
to head back to work, Mr. Cog.
You know the Drill. This will be your last
and only warning.
One, two, three, four—”
At that moment Mr. Cog turns and walks back
to the parking lot
where his flying car is parked.
Figures, he thinks shaking his head
grimacing and mumbling insults to himself.
It’s just another day in the Twenty-Fifth Century.
