‘Nearly 130 died in Ukraine clashes’

Military operation and fatal clashes in eastern and southern Ukraine has left nearly 130 people dead, says UN assistant secretary-general for human rights.

Presenting the second report of the UN human rights observation mission in Ukraine at a press conference in Kiev on Friday, Ivan Simonovic said at least 127 people had been killed during violent clashes and operations by Ukrainian troops in the eastern and southern parts of the country.

The UN official raised concerns over the deteriorating situation in southeast Ukraine, saying Kiev’s operation and the growing number of armed groups committing illegal acts had significantly aggravated the human rights there.

“The report describes the deeply disturbing deterioration of the human rights situation in the east and south of the country,” he said, adding that UN monitors had documented 112 cases of unlawful detention, with the condition and whereabouts of around 50 people still unknown.

The UN report also notes that Ukraine police often failed to do enough to avoid clashes.

Ukraine’s acting President Oleksandr Turchynov launched military operations in southeastern Ukraine in mid-April in a bid to root out pro-Russia demonstrations.

Russia has repeatedly condemned Kiev’s operation against the protesters, saying authorities in Kiev should immediately end the “punitive operation” and violence against their own people.

According to the UN mission, a total of 250 people have died in clashes in Ukraine since November, when the country’s then president, Viktor Yanukovych, refrained from signing a deal with the European Union in favor of closer ties with neighboring Russia.
