New blind catfish found in India

The newly discovered catfish measuring 3.5-4 centimeters in length and bright blood-red in color have no eyes, the team described.

The scientists through examining the animal by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) explored that while the fish’s skin was covered in pores, especially in the head area, it breathes through the skin as well as the gills.

The recently found catfish is one of several species of hypogean (living underground) catfish that feeds on minute organic matter in the sediments at the bottom of the well.

The new species of blind cat fish has been named Horaglanis abdulkalami after former Indian President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam who is believed his contributions to science had inspired the scientists, according to the researchers.

The researchers are currently studying the catfish’s genome sequence to find whether it might be related to any other species within India or in other countries.

“We gave done the basic morphology of the species, but we are still going into the molecular characterization to trace their ancestors and their evolutionary links,” said the study leader Dr Bijoy Nandan from Cochin University of Science and Technology.

The team also found unknown species of blind eel in the same region which is rich in biodiversity but poorly documented, according to the paper published in the Indian science journal Samagra.
