Asked how he would do this, Mr Sarkozy said: “I am a lawyer, I’ve always
had an office and I’m passionate about so many thing. In any case, I’ll
change my life completely, and you won’t hear from me again.”
Admitting that he is worn out by the hectic life of a head of state, Mr
Sarkozy said he dreamt of a “calmer life where I can … travel, seek
responsibilities, begin my weeks on Tuesday and finish them on Thursday
night! Frankly, I’m not scared of that.”
Referring to Francois Mitterand, France’s last Socialist president who retired
in 1995, Mr Sarkozy said: “Mitterrand used to travel for pleasure. I’m
not criticising, but I try to do things.”
On a 2007 trip to Hungary – where his family originally comes from – Mr
Sarkozy said he dreamt of staying in Budapest and riding in the forest,
swimming and going to a concert.
Mr Sarkozy’s cabinet colleague Brice Hortefeux said Mr Sarkozy “imagines
his life after politics as more pleasant.”
The French president trails his Socialist rival Francois Hollande in the
polls, while far right National Front leader Marine Le Pen also is also
taking votes away from Mr Sarkozy.
Mr Sarkozy recently had a child with his third wife, former supermodel Carla
Bruni-Sarkozy, but both have been involved in a series of high-profile
scandals.
The first round of voting in the presidential elections takes places in April,
with the decisive second round in May.
