Nike pulled their blood-spattered “Boston Massacre” t-shirts from the shelves of their factory outlets stores this week after there were complaints about the shirts that were originally intended for New York Yankee fans.
In light of the Boston Marathon bombings, the shirts were deemed insensitive, with Nike making the decision to stop selling them.
A photo of the Nike “Boston Massacre” baseball t-shirt was tweeted by “Late Show with David Letterman” producer Eric Stangel on April 20, in hopes of getting attention from the athletic company company.
Saw this @ Nike Outlet. Told them they shouldn’t be selling it. They said “We’ve been taking them down.” – @EricStangel
Shortly after his tweet, employees told Stangel they were taking the shirts down.
The phrase “Boston Massacre” was used to describe a late-season sweep by the Yankees of the rival Boston Red Sox back in 1978 that led to a World Series championship for the Yankees.
Nike spokeswoman Mary Remuzzi issued a statement to the AP this week stating, “We conducted this process as quickly as possible and are confident the product has been removed from distribution.”
