Clashes broke out between ethnic Fulani herdsmen and local farmers in the city of Wadata on Tuesday, said Captain Salisu Mustapha, spokesman or the Nigerian military’s Joint Task Force in the state, on Thursday.
“I can confirm that at least nine people were killed and several injured in the violence between the local farmers and Fulani cattle rearers…The place is now calm but we are still investigating the cause of the fighting,” he added.
Meanwhile, following the discovery of a local farmer’s corpse in the same region, local inhabitants said some 20 people might have lost their lives in the clashes.
Police were reportedly deployed to the area following the deadly clashes.
Plateau state is situated in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where the Muslim-dominated north and the Christian-majority south meet.
According to the Brussels-based International Crisis Group, communal conflicts in Nigeria claimed the lives of over 14,000 people between 1999 and 2009.
