The 14th-ranked Michigan Wolverines (28-6, 6-0 Big-10) stayed unbeaten in Big-10 play with a doubleheader sweep of Penn State (7-19, 0-3 Big-10) on March 30 at Beard Field at Nittany Lion Park. The Wolverines won the first game 18-4 in five innings and took the second game 9-6.
In game one, Michigan rapped out 17 hits and tallied a run in each of the five innings of the game. The Wolverines had six of their 12 batters in the first inning cross home plate. Michigan collected four hits and drew five walks during the outburst.
The Wolverines added one run in the second, six in the third, four in the fourth and one in the fifth inning.
Sierra Romero went 2-for-3 with two home runs, four runs and four runs batted in for Michigan. Caitlin Blanchard went 3-for-4 with three runs and one runs batted in for the Wolverines. Ashley Lane, Sierra Lawrence and Sara Driesenga, who drove in five runs, collected two hits apiece.
The Wolverines drew 10 walks and left 11 on-base.
Driesenga (19-5) went the distance to pick up the victory. She allowed five hits, struck out three and walked five.
Reina Furuya went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in, the hit was her first career home run. Alyssa Sovereign, Cassidy Bell, Lauren Yao and Kasie Hatfield also collected a hit for Penn State.
Marissa Diescher (0-4) allowed six runs on three hits in the loss. She also walked five in 0.1 innings of work. Jordan Wheatley and Rachel Myers followed Diescher on the mound.
In game two, Michigan took a 7-0 lead before Penn State rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Hatfield started the Nittany Lions’ rally with a single to right field. Shannon Hutchinson followed Hatfield’s hit with a single and Macy Jones reached first on an error by Blanchard, who was playing first base for the Wolverines.
Sovereign broke up the shutout with an RBI single that scored Alicia Walker, who pinch ran for Hatfield. Cassidy Bell then knocked in Hutchinson with a single to make the score 7-2. Two miscues by Michigan’s defense (one error) helped Penn State cut into the deficit even further (7-4). Pinch-hitter Liz Presto and Kailyn Johnson knocked in the Nittany Lions final two runs of frame with singles.
Michigan answered Penn State’s rally with two runs in the sixth. The Wolverines scored on a sacrifice fly by Lawrence and a double by Sweet. The RBI was Sweet’s fifth of the game, which set a career high. Sweet also set career-highs with four hits, three doubles and three runs scored in game two.
Nicole Sappingfield (3-for-5, 1 RBI), Ashley Lane (3-for-4, 2 runs) and Jaclyn Crummey (2-for-4) also produced multiple hit games.
Haylie Wagner (8-1) went the distance to earn her second victory of the series. She struck out six and surrendered eight hits. Only two of Penn State’s runs were earned.
Lacy Jones (6-7) gave up 14 hits and eight runs in the loss. She walked three and struck out two in seven innings of work.
Other notes:
– Michigan freshmen Sierra Romero and Sierra Lawrence were selected to the USA Junior National Team on March 29. Romero, who hit three home runs in the Wolverines series against Penn State, leads the team in batting average (.395), home runs (14) and RBIs (38). Lawrence is hitting .341 with three home runs and 20 runs batted in.
– Penn State senior Cassidy Bell extended her hitting streak to eight. Bell now has 183 hits for career, which ties her the 11th most in program history.
– The Wolverines’18 runs in game one of the doubleheader is a season-high.
