Such launches are widely viewed as North
Korea’s cover for testing its long-range missile technology and
regarded as a violation of United Nations Security Council resolution’s
prohibiting the state from nuclear and ballistic missile activity.
Plans for next month’s proposed satellite launch were unveiled as North Korean
officials also confirmed that it had already launched two experimental
satellites in advance of the event.
The announcement prompted criticism from a senior official at the Japan’s
foreign ministry, who told Jiji news agency that such a move would mark a
further violation of UN resolutions.
