According to industry body Oil & Gas UK, oil and gas production will dip by three and six percent, respectively, this year that will spell misery for the economy when coupled with the 12 percent plunge in 2012.
Office for National Statistics has confirmed that oil production problems cut 0.2 percent off the GDP growth in 2012 after taking its toll on both 2010 and 2011.
Production from North Sea oil fields plummeted by a third between 2010 and 2012 due to the government failure to consider new developments in 2008 and 2009.
Ageing North Sea structures, which are on stream since the 1970’s, are also another factor in the production loss forcing older platforms into temporary closures to conduct unplanned maintenance.
Analysts believe production levels will increase in 2014 will oil fields continuing to deliver adequately until 2017.
However, the Oil & Gas UK said lack of new oil discoveries means production will take another hit after 2017.
