NSA spied on ‘89,138 targets’ last year

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence has revealed that the US National Security Agency spied on nearly 90,000 “targets” last year.

The ODNI said in its transparency report on Friday the NSA needed one order from the federal surveillance court to obtain permission for its spying on 89,138 targets.

A “target” might refer to an individual, a group, a foreign power or “an organization composed of multiple individuals.” The figure might not indicate the actual number of people targeted by the NSA.

According to the report, the FBI in 2013 issued more than 19,000 national security letters, which the agency uses to get information about people’s communications without a warrant.

The letters contained nearly 39,000 requests for information, which the ODNI noted is likely larger than the actual number of people targeted by the letters because many may be aimed at multiple email addresses or other accounts controlled by the same person.

The revelations were disclosed in the ODNI’s first transparency report about secret US spying operations.

The report comes more than a year after President Barack Obama ordered to declassify “as much information as possible” about government operations.

“Today, and consistent with the DNI’s directive on August 29, 2013, we are releasing information related to the use of these important tools, and will do so in the future on an annual basis,” the ODNI said.
