Northern Territory police will have the resources to deal with a full blown riot at a detention centre after the federal government paid for 94 new police.
NT Chief Minister Paul Henderson on Monday said his government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the federal government to get $53 million over two years to fund 94 new police officers.
Mr Henderson has lobbied for the new officers so that the police force could react to a “worst case scenario” at Darwin’s two immigration detention centres.
“The worst case scenario is a full blown riot and a breach of security which would see a significant number of detainees break out into the broader community,” he said.
He said he had argued because the detention centres were placed in the Northern Territory by the federal government, the response to those detention centres should be federally funded.
“We in the Northern Territory should not see a reduction in police availability to the general community as a response to any events that happen in these detention facilities,” Mr Henderson said.
There are two main immigration detention centres in the Northern Territory, one at Berrimah and another at Wickham Point.
In 2010 dozens of detainees at the Northern Immigration Detention Facility in Berrimah rioted.
NT Police Commissioner John McRoberts said he was “delighted” with the news which would boost police numbers in the jurisdiction by about eight per cent.
“The police officers will be recruited, effective immediately,” Mr McRoberts said.
