It was not clear which side the casualties were on. Witnesses say between 600-800 Republican Guard soldiers took part in the protest.
Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi abolished the elite unit, led by the eldest son of former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, last year in a bid to restructure the army.
According to a military sources, reinforcements from the military police and anti-riot troops were deployed around the palace and that calm returned after the clashes.
The violence came a day after Yemeni president met US President Barack Obama at the White House.
Yemen’s military remains divided between loyalists and opponents of Saleh, who resigned in 2012 after a year of mass protests against his three-decade rule.
