Opiates kill US troopers in Afghanistan

According to recently-obtained records of the United States Army Criminal Investigation Command, the eight victims were among 56 US soldiers investigated by the Army on suspicion of possessing, using or distributing heroin and other opiates, CNN reported on Saturday.

The investigative records show that deaths were caused by heroin toxicity or taking a mix of prescription and other opiate drugs.

Military statistics indicate that the number of US soldiers in Afghanistan testing positive for heroin has risen from 10 in 2002 to 116 in 2010.

Based on a study conducted by the United Nations in 2009, Afghanistan supplies about 90 percent of the world’s opium, which is also a main source of revenue for the Taliban economy.

According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), farmer income derived from cultivation of the poppy crop was USD 1.4 billion (EUR 1.09 billion) in 2011. The figure accounted for nine percent of Afghanistan’s gross domestic product.

The office also said that more than 131,000 hectares were used for opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan last year, up seven percent from the previous year.

Insecurity continues to climb across Afghanistan, despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led troops there.

According to the US Department of Defense and US Central Command, death toll of US forces in Afghanistan has reached more than 1,850 since 2001.
