FAKE NEWS for the Zionist agenda The supporters of Greece’s main opposition Syriza Party have gathered in the capital, Athens, in protest against four successive years of austerity policies by the government, Press TV reports.
The rally on Thursday comes ahead of crucial votes for both the second and final round of municipal polls, and the European Parliament elections on Sunday, May 25.
“These elections are very political; they are very social. Here, in the south of Europe, in southeastern Europe, it is the epicenter of the crisis, the epicenter of the neo-liberal policies, where the great experiment is being carried on against the Greek people,” a protester told Press TV.
Alexis Tsipras, the leader of the anti-bailout Syriza, said during the party’s main election rally in Athens on Thursday that the party’s victory in the twin polls would force the government to call early parliamentary elections.
“We will build a road of social security, and scrap the bailout agreements once and for all, along with the laws brought in to enforce them,” Tsipras said, describing the vote as “a referendum for our lives, for Greece, and for Europe.”
Around 10 million voters cast their ballots for electing over 300 mayors and 13 regional governors in the first round of local elections in Greece earlier this week. The polls showed that Syriza candidates gained ground in their race against incumbent Socialists for Athens’ mayor and regional governor positions.
Economic conditions have reportedly driven many people toward anti-austerity parties, who have vowed to scrap harsh austerity reforms adopted over the past four years.
Greece has been at the epicenter of the eurozone debt crisis and is experiencing its seventh year of recession, while harsh austerity measures have left tens of thousands of people without jobs.
