PA seizes Israeli truck loaded with chemical wastes

Days of Palestine, West Bank -Palestinian Authority (PA) seized on Monday an Israeli truck full of chemical wastes heading to illegally unload in occupied Palestinian territories, a statement said.

According to the statement, which was issued by the PA’s Environmental Quality Authority, the truck left the Israeli settlement of Karnei Shomron, before it had been seized between the Palestinian villages of Kafr Thulth and Azzun near the West Bank city of Qalqilya.

The truck was to be offloaded near a residential compound in Qalqilya, the statement revealed, stating that the load included remains of several chemical industries, including paint.

It also stated that the authority handed the truck and its driver over to the District Coordination Office.

A senior official in the authority said a complaint regarding this Israeli violation would be filed to the Secretariat of Basel Convention, which is in charge of the transport of dangerous materials.

He also said that the Palestinian contractors, who were involved in this issue, would be prosecuted.

Environment expert George Karzam told Quds Press: “The Israeli occupation recently closed a number of its dumps and facilities related to treating solid and chemical waste in the lands occupied in 1948 [Israel] moving them to new sites in the West Bank, mainly in the Jordan Valley.”

This was because of the poisonous substances which were being discarded as well as the bad smells coming from the dumps, Karzam explained.

Israeli occupation has also been putting pressure on the Palestinian Authority to open new waste sites for illegal settlements in the West Bank, he added.
