Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says Pakistan is involved in “a proxy war of terrorism” against his country, as tensions slowly rise between New Delhi and Islamabad over a disputed territory.
Modi made the remarks during his visit to the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.
“Pakistan has lost the strength to fight a conventional war, but continues to engage in the proxy war of terrorism,” said the Indian premier while he was addressing military and air force personnel in Ladakh Province’s town of Leh.
Modi’s visit to the region’s Kargil area on August 13 made him the first Indian prime minister to travel to the district in 15 years.
Among the objectives of Modi’s visit to the area are the inauguration of two hydro power projects, Chutak in Kargil and Nimoo Bazgo in Leh, and establishing a power transmission line in the region.
India and Pakistan are involved in a territorial dispute over Kashmir. The two neighbors have fought three wars since their independence from Britain in 1947 – two of them over Kashmir.
Earlier this week, India said two of its border guards and two civilians had been injured in Pakistani fire in Arina sector. Islamabad also accused India of killing a woman and injuring two others in Charwah sector near Sialkot.
On August 10, Islamabad summoned a senior Indian diplomat following a cross-border exchange of fire near the eastern city of Sialkot, saying it has filed a formal protest against India.
