Pakistan slams attack on Indian mission

Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Chaudhry said in a statement on Saturday afternoon that terrorism was a common enemy confronting the countries of the region.

“Terrorism is the common enemy that countries in the region face. Collective endeavors would help effectively combat this scourge,” the statement read.

“Pakistan strongly condemns the suicide attack in Jalalabad today which resulted in the loss of many innocent lives. We extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the bereaved families,” the statement added.

The senior official also tried to downplay the reports that the attackers had merely targeted the Indian Consulate and said the Pakistani Consulate General was also located in the same vicinity.

India has strongly reacted against the recent attack on its consulate in Jalalabad on Saturday morning, with official sources blaming the attack on Pakistani nationals.

New Delhi has in the past had blamed the Haqqani network of carrying out attacks on the Indian mission in Kabul. The militant network operates on both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

The deadly attack in Jalalabad comes at a time when India and Pakistan are trying to resume the peace process, stalled in January.

The developments come as a recent United Nations report says there has been a sharp increase in civilian casualties in Afghanistan in the first half of the current year.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said on Wednesday that civilian deaths were up 23 percent in the six months from a year ago.

The war-weary Afghan civilians are the main victims of the conflict which began after the 2001 US-led invasion.

Over a decade of the costly US-led war in Afghanistan has failed to end militancy in the country and the US, which has thousands of troops on the ground in Afghanistan, is now trying to sit down for talks with Taliban militants.
